Inside Natural Bodybuilding Part 5

This is part 5 in a series of 5 interviews with bodybuilder Tomas de la Milera. He is a 51 year old bodybuilder with a classic physique like Frank Zane. Peek into his world as he prepares for competition and he shares the truth about bodybuilding over 50.

Dealing with bodybuilders

Tracey: Alright this is my favorite question. When you’re dieting, how does it affect others around you?

Tomas: Well first of all I like that and I like to add to that, that if it wasn’t for some people that I have around me, it would make it much, much more difficult. If we think we do this on our own, think again. There are a lot of people that participate in it, a lot of people that have to be a little bit more patient with you. But in relationship to the question, I have gotten better at my bi-polarism when I get to that diet stage where I’m very carb depleted. But what I am finding out this year by increasing the fat intake, I have less of those mood swings.

It’s really interesting; you will really start to understand the importance of carbohydrates and micronutrient relations. Because you really start finding yourself really moody, you start finding yourself dizzy at times, going hypoglycemic. I think in relationship to that, bodybuilding has gotten to a point that it’s lost its health to fitness ratio and it’s more about how you look in fitness and less health. It’s unfortunate that you have to take it down to that point, 5% body fat like my last show, but in relationship to other people, they are very challenged! They must love you very much if they’re going to go through this whatever period you’re going through when it comes to dieting. That’s part of the truth about bodybuilding – it’s tough on the people you care about the most sometimes.

Funny bodybuilding moments

Tracey: What’s the funniest or strangest bodybuilding moment you’ve seen or experienced?

Tomas: You know, in the professional sense of the world, I have to be honest with you. I think the funniest thing about the bodybuilding world and what I’ve seen is how serious people can get before hitting the stage. I find it quite humorous how the ego builds to the point and nobody’s having fun, and it’s me against you and you know, “this is my secret,” “I’m not gunna share my ideas with anybody.” You go in the back and you’re prepping up and getting ready and it’s like them against the world. I actually find that very humorous compared to anything in the gym.

I think people take it a little bit too far in relationship to just life and the people around them. I think it’s very humorous the way people get! It’s very comical if you actually see them. And what’s also very humorous too, what we were just talking about diet-wise, the mood swings and the things you say and the constant apologies that you have to give because you went through one of your highs and lows. I find that very humorous.

Tracey:
Okay good! Thank you Tomas!! Thank you for sharing your truth about bodybuilding over 50.

Tomas: Oh you’re welcome!! Thank you!
